Albemarle County Board of Supervisors approves
zoning for Blue Ridge Cohousing in Crozet, Virginia
Blue Ridge Cohousing Approved!
Blue Ridge Cohousing's plan to build a cohousing neighborhood in Crozet,
Virginia was approved by the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors on
Wednesday, November 14, 2007.  The 6.2-acre property is on Parkview Drive,
behind the Crozet Veterinary Care Center, walking distance to Downtown Crozet
and many planned nearby stores and restaurants in nearby commercial
properties being developed.

The 26 homes in Blue Ridge Cohousing will be clustered together to maximize
greenspace.  The area in front of the homes is a car-free pedestrian area and
parking is relegated to the sides of the community.  Neighbors will own their own
homes but will share ownership of the property's 100 year old common house
as well as share common green space, organic gardens, a playground, a barn
and a pool.  These are all features of cohousing, a neighborhood design that
began in Scandinavia and has been growing in the U.S. over the last 15 years.

"In building Blue Ridge Cohousing, we are hoping to create the community feel
of an old-style village in a modern context," says co-founder Z. Peter Lazar.  "And
as a graduate of UVa, I feel that Charlottesville already has experience with
cohousing-like concepts conceived by Thomas Jefferson in 'The Lawn' at the
University of Virginia."

Blue Ridge Cohousing is a not-for-profit group of future neighbors who have
partnered with developer Community Housing Partners Corporation (CHPC).
Virginia-based CHPC previously built two other cohousing neighborhoods in
Virginia.  Specializing in affordable and green building, CHPC won the
Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy's 2007 ENERGY
STAR® Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Affordable Housing.  Blue Ridge
Cohousing and CHPC plan to complete the homes by Fall of 2008.
